@Malis59 @Eric12340 @Daniilchert
Sorry I was unclear, players before the WC was established are not included.
@Tigerthinksbad
Yusupov was a good player and incredible coach, but not at that high a level.
@W_in_chat
The players on the list are only those who never became world champ.
@MorrisB
Also excellent players.

Paul Keres belongs in Top 3 if not top 2

As to the world championship, there are all kinds of problems with the title.Steinitz said he would never claim he was world champion while Morphey was alive. Also, Morphey , it very much appears, got sick and tired of chess. He wouldn't have wanted the title anyway. Third it is my understanding that Steinitz proclaimed himself world champion. There certainly was no international body that set up the match and proclaimed it a world championship match. Then there is the ridiculous fact that the rienining World champ could duck playing any contender. It took Copa Blanca forever to get his shot at the championship. How bogus is that? And finally, most irritating to my way of thinking, nowadays, we talk about women and men champions in tennis. Until chess gets caught up with tennis I will consider the men's champion the men's champion and nothing else. And win chess does catch up with tennis I will continue to consider the men's champion merely the men's champion. Apparently the men don't have the guts to face the top woman in a real world championship showdown. I don't blame them. You have to have a great ego to get that far in chess and the men would feel so emasculated after the woman champion annihilated any one of them in the real world championship. And until they actually meet nobody can tell me it cannot happen. It could.

I'm surprised that Nimzovich is not on this list! Not that I disagree with any of your choices, but he deserved an honorable mention, IMO.

How is possible to put in the list Mark Taimanov and not Efim Geller? And also Larsen and Portish should be ahead Taimanov who is most known for opening theory but not for tournament results
