if Qxc4 Nd5, black can play Qxd5 going down an exchange but has good compensation with at least 2 pawns and a potentially running a-pawn.

For example: 28. Rc1 Qxc4 29. Nd5 Qxd5 30. exd5 Rxe3 31. fxe3 (Rxe3 and there's a skewer with Bh6) Nd3 32. Rd1 Nxb2 33. Rb1 Nc4 34. Rxb7 cxd5

But I also don't have to take. I was intending Rae8 and it's not simple to defend the e-pawn with f5 coming soon.

This is USCF. I definitely have a consistently problem. I have multiple wins over players ~1800, but also tend to lose some to players around 1200 from time to time.
