Revisiting AlphaZero's out of this world chess to reveal "Installation Theory"

I don't see how installations are different from advantages, it creates an additional and useless name to explain things, that are already explained in a simple way.

Installations seem more visual to me and seem a great way to understand neural network patterns to leverage in one’s own chess, For example I have quite often had great ganes installing thorn pawns. The installation metaphor seems very useful to me personally and reanalysing the Alphazero ganes does seem to give this underlying philosophy.

Also the path to victory on neural networks is not the best move approach but rather the visual installation approach ... not minding if a game takes much longer to win. The downside is often less than optimal moves to create the installations.

I actually wish we had more names for stuff in chess. I run into a lot of patterns in puzzles where I'm sure there's a name for something just to find out there isn't.

i like this new conceptual way of thinking about chess, very interesting!

really interesting. reminding us that having multiples tools of analysis might help explore chess where no one has gone before.

I mean different angles. I did not know anything about installation theory. I will work on this blog. Thanks for offering this breath of fresh engine air.

I hope it can shake the general blindness which is natural when only using one type of engine, and assuming that it being the best in engine tournament as they have been setup long ago for some technology objective (that I am not sure to understand nowadays, that human have long been beaten, what is it that they are optimizing now exactly). did i finnish that statement? no ... assuming that being the best there makes for it not having some restricted view of chess, and therefore its own style, where they all outcompete themselves within (in absence of independent measure over all positions....) and therefore not being the only analysis tool to consult, or risking oneself to have a styled view of optimal chess.

Thanks for going back to another style of engine. To unclog the sinuses of one engine is the best analysis tool assumption. I have kept a room in my set of long lasting questions, as I keep wanting to understand chess about how human relate to that style of engine chess. What other views of chess might be there.

Now, i need to work on the chess part. which is more work for me.. I will try to convince someone more knowledgeable than me, for some discussion, after some ongoing things have been digested, as this seems to be the only way i can digest chess things. Using your blog as starting proposition. I will keep this on my trajectory.

Thanks
