other idea: you could use chessground from lichess and allow drawings and even allow a mode without no pieces and only the activities (with the occlusion and superpposition where applicable), that a learning approach might have the user attempt as one of the "now you see, now you don't" visual contrast toggle helpers.
The chessground drawing would allow the user to make hypotheses. I do not know how much work it would be to had your spatial activity "logic" layers to chessground, perhaps it might even make you life easier. Although it might be rabbit hole to figure out from source code, you might get some help for generous devs with their time and curiosity to communicate the ideas of their sources code.
or @lichess. might learn from you.

i should make screenshots maybe. but I am finding that perhaps the calibration of the paint mode in the "tint" dimension might be a bit off. I would expect some green even if the arithmetics make it positive or negative in the yellow or blue direction.
could we have the math. of the color coding. Also the number coding is not as informative as the paint.
and if taking this as a discovery exercise to study the board activity from under the pieces on board, beyond the material immediate exchanges possibililties, I find being exposed to the full nuances to be my mude doing those exercise, I might be finding the guess of the pieces to just be a pretext to that kind of reward about being able to see the whole ensemble of activities. this is like a new world for patzers (intermediate ones peharps, but still ignorant and inexperienced enough to find that intriguing world to look at, the task being just an attention emotional drive... or something like that). now going to finishi.. if you are not getting my question, or if it is me that is mistaken about the "color signal dynamics range", maybe i could do screeshots next time. until i get the puzzle done. and use all filters. to make a maxtrix and we could discuss that here.. or in inbox first. I would be motivated that way. if you do not want to show the math. to all at first.. no pressure. just sharing my possible motivating options.

ok. i took a break ( i need to take many of them, in general. small burst I do), and it seems that even without the timer on, the puzzles end up disappearing saying not more guesses:

In that state i need to reload to get another board, and have to get through another window, and login agin with lichess. this is not end of world. that last part as I discovered that if going through the position (failing as I did want to live on the edge of guessing from the general look of what might be there, the investigation being about my own imagination and current state of experience that way, not so much the calculation, actually I am not that interested in the calculation of it, more about my inution of the relation between combined activities and materaili types and locations, as well as perhaps depending on the characteristic of your set of chosen positions (do they come from samplikng some database with its own characteristics, that could also be controled or parametrized).
I might be a bit too curious about under the hood, right? but the point is that this would be affecting either the testing or the discovery value (learning, not chess tournament discovery, that is for a minority, but learners, we have that joy in a big area of chess left to explore....). As you did talk about chess "savvy" it might be about position expectations from experiencel. how diverse can those be, etc... lots of things to explore from not just the single user end but about a big chunk of the chess experience.. Sure not traditional. But it resonates with me.

The shading isn't quite right for "paint" mode yet in terms of the actual levels of each color. In general the additive ("light") mixture seems to be more visually obvious anyhow.
The UI in general could always be improved - the app could check (as lichess does) for an already stored login token and simply automatically log a player in, but that then requires a "log out" option somewhere else, etc., so there's inevitably some tradeoff.
My immediate aims are to clarify the high score modes and tables and to improve the app's general stability. As far as I can tell it's not super buggy but it's hard to test on all possible platforms and systems, so user feedback is appreciated.
Thanks,

reporting on site showing puzzles and responding to filter changes but not accepting the guesses choices once clicked on the piece choice dialog. might be that I played with zoom (trying to make the board smaller for a more retina rich region experience.
forgot how to word that otherwise the retina region where crowding is less of a problem...
but I took off the extension and let my 90% edge pan-web user control. and then even 100% and that is not the problem.

tried today and it plays. 2024-11-08 in my morning. thanks, if that was not a fluke of the internet yesterday. And thanking the flukes for being gone otherwise.
Edit: sorry. looking like fluke it is and there they still are. I could just do a pawn. but writing here, I lost the site, upon going back all happy, little did I know, that the flukes were still onto me.
it might be a reload problem. i can't even fail it by doing random guesses.. it does not accept the click on pieces at all. as yesterday now. It does keep memory of last uncovered piece choice that did work. maybe this day to day should be better done on discord. but that it a load to fire, and my impulsivness seems to prefer here. hmm.. lazy.
edit:
Just in case: I pruned down most of my non-essential extensions (that i remember using daily are the essentials).
But that did not help, when logged in through lichess dboing, my very self rambler maestro, or yours, rambly.
But, little did he know, (still me), that one could also log in as guest. and all we be forgiven.. and it did.. so i can still have some whole board many pieces potential activity (but immediate). (do not go for the en passant nay sayers worries, this is static chess, the potential. the en passant is not to tickle the synapses. If en passant was a winning stragety or would be critical, well that would be for calculation to find out. not potential foresight at a glance training.
