Lichess: End of Year Update 2025

@cormacobear said in #7:

we used to announce projects we were working on in the year end update. One year we mentioned a project that turned out to be much more complicated than we had expected and that project still hasn't been completed in recent years. This was a bit embarrassing so we are a bit more reluctant to pre announce projects we are discussing in case we decide not to make those changes.

In case anyone is wondering, he is referring to Lichess Tutor

@charliedatil Gemini doesn't work here. I think some of the app is in flutter, i'm not a dev. The web app lead dev had some time off there are a number of questions and possible bugs to be worked on or answered most of the time. Hopefully some will have fixes for these soon. Like the site the app is always a work in progress by human devs

We do have a group considering ways to help the site grow. We certainly hope to grow but there are usually projects we wish to fund we feel could be done faster with financing so profitable years can become sustainable margins when we use the money. But we are always thinking about this.

@Lichess
I want to discuss something deeper now that we are starting 2026: Lichess has attached itself to the philosophy, way of life, and core values of its founder Thibault Duplessis and of course Lichess has given humanity enourmous value and I'm grateful to Thibault and all devs for it!

Just want to provide feedback: Duplessis has said numerous times online or during interviews the following: If we (Lichess) get more donations, we'll get more things done; if someday we get less, things will slow down. We don't have to be profitable, just to be sustainable.

This idea of being sustainable, not profitable, seems to be the huge bottle neck of Lichess development. There are myriad of examples of profitable non for profits: the Mayo Clinic, Doctors without Borders, OpenStreet Maps, Signal, Raspberry Pi Hardware, Mozilla, and the list goes on with a big and endless etcetera.

My feedback: Make Lichess profitable, make it grow, hire more devs, and increase your impact both online and offline!

I'll be completly honest, if Lichess does not care about offline games, TakeTakeTake will.

I might be the only one regularly using it, but will we get more 3D piece sets in the future?
I like playing like that but the choices of pieces are very limited, and to be fair most of them just hurt my eyes :D
