I played on lichess.org and chess.com, I canceled my chess.com account because they decided to remove the Russian flag from user accounts a few years ago.

YES
aren't lots of GMs sponsored by chess.com? If so, might it be in their contract that they should spend a certain number of time on the site, participate in tournaments, etc. ?

Is there also a comparison with the Internet Chess Club (https://www.chessclub.com)? That used to bill itself as "Where grandmasters come to play", and it relaunched itself with a new gamer-friendly look in 2024.
But you hardly hear of it these days. What happened?

A huge factor, I think, is the fact that Chess com directly sponsors many masters. I'm pretty sure there are plenty of chess com sponsored masters who still prefer lichess, but simply don't say this out loud and/or play at lichess anonymously.
I am convinced that without the sponsoring, Lichess would be a clear winner in this comparison.

ICC used to be the place to be. But that was over 20 years ago. They simply forgot to modernize the site, and what they've done recently is way too little way too late. ICC is pretty much dead, and unlikely to resurrect.

Love This! it is really nice to see that people have intrest in not just playing, but studying this kinds of stuff.

good
Honestly, chess.com is such crap at this point that I wonder how can anyone prefer it to lichess still...

What would be interesting to see is a general rating distribution of the players. It is no secret that chess com simply has a huge money fund they invest into attracting GMs in big tournaments. Lichess has only one prize money tournament in comparison.
And as other people mentioned, chess com also partners with some of the top GMs.
I would theorise that because of that the higher rated GMs are still favouring chess com as their playing platform (e.g. Magnus, Hikaru, Hans Niemann, and many more that regularly play Tilted Tuesday, but are rarely here).
I must already admit that I am slightly surprised by these numbers. Even I as a huge Lichess fan thought that chess com would generally be the platform that tilted players preferred.
