How i got IM :
1. My whole chess exercise was openings openings openings
2. Active learning was preparing with computer for my opponents. I imitated their playing and learned how the engine smashed or disturbed me.
3. I agree. Time trouble is the reason why i am under 2400 ELO again. When i got the three IM norms i moved very fast. not because i was younger. i prepared for my games, didnt need much time in the openings (-->1) knowing the most positions and strategies out of that positionings very well.
4. play round robin tournaments or in a national league. easier in preparation. you can lose many ELO in an open. i got all three norms in the german second league.
