The most important point is not the name of modality.
Modality, not variation. It is chess, not a game based in chess.
The most important, I think, is that the most players learn to enjoy of it without abandon in any way (why?) the classic one.
Interest of best players is basic. In the same way that an opening played by world champion is copied by many other players the best way to spread it is that the best players play it, but it makes necessary money for tournaments.
Different names for modality only makes difficult the search, I may look for FRC, 960, Freestyle, Fischer Random with or without the word 'chess' beside.

I will keep calling it Chess960.

Can we get "Quick Pairing" for Fisher Random Chess now that there are millions of dollars of prizes for the best players?
I often play people not as close to my rating and in not my preferred time format.
Just pick a bullet, blitz and rapid time control that is used in Fisher Random tournaments and fairly popular on here.
Among masters 1/2+0, 1+0, 3+0 are the most popular over the past year.
1+0 and 3+0 would work for bullet and blitz quick pairing and it should probably have a rapid mode with Fischer delay for casual players.
I personally think it needs slightly more main time than increment than Chess as the openings need more thinking.
10+2 or 10+3 would be perfect.
So add another row: Fischer Random 1+0 , 3+0, 10+3

I think there is also a potential compromise in naming different time controls with the different names, perhaps freestyle chess for classical time controls since it's the first world championship with classical time controls, Fischer random for blitz since his tournament had a much shorter time control, and chess960 for rapid since that's the name the Mainz and FIDE tournaments used and their time controls fell into the rapid category. If 9LX wants in on the action they can have bullet I suppose

Fischer didn't invent the variation. He made some refinements, but it was around a long time before he started promoting it. Chess960 is a much better name.

Everybody with the tiniest sliver of good taste prefers the name Fischer Random Chess.
I think that the reason for that other name is "business reasons". Partly, as already stated, it has "a catchy ring to it".
You can't have it both ways. But I agree with your other points - it's good a business decision by Magnus and his partner to be able to trademark a new championship series.

We didnt named a single chess variation or modality after its inventors, why should we make an exeption on this one? And too be honest nowadays naming your big product after someone who was famously anti-semitism isnt a great choice for your brand, especially if your from germany.

Fischer Random Chess or Chess960. First one contains legacy of the 11th World Champion. While second one might be better in a way that it's brief, neutral. Fischer also used "Chess960" name and liked it.
I don't see any point in overall renaming while of course it's impossible to prohibit someone to call it whatever he likes.
I don't get overall controversy with Fischer he may said some bad things, but people should also take into account how his own government treated him (horribly), and check what other leading grandmasters talked about him in his era. A lot respected him, not only as a player but as a person. He was mentally unstable though.

@CyberShredder I totally agree with you. Fischer was mentally ill
