AI Slop is Invading the Chess World

@TotalNoob69 said in #69:

The problem is that no one made a good chess analyser :D It has nothing to do with AI and LLMs cannot power the necessary machine learning architecture required for such a module. As always, it's not AI slop, it's sloppy humans using AI wrong.

I tried building something like that: https://github.com/romit-basak/chess-explainer

This basically works with a small, local LLM and Stockfish. Stockfish is the main chess brain, the LLM doesn't try to do any analysis by itself, just presents stockfish output in natural language. I am in no way claiming that it is perfect, even with constraints LLMs hallucinate sometimes(especially small models). But this is an attempt to create what the AI "marketers" claim as the benefits of LLMs for chess analysis.

SF only shows lines ordered by risk. It doesn't explain what the problems are with the position or what the plans are (it doesn't have any). That's the main alignment problem between chess engines and what people want from a chess tutor.

The analyzer I made tries to explain a little bit. For example, it says stuff like:

White develops their bishop with Be3, controlling d4 and preparing Qd2. If Black responds with Nf6, White continues with Qd2. Qc2 is slightly inferior, while Nd4 leaves the c3 pawn undefended.

It is constrained to verify all of its analyzes with stockfish. For example, it looks at stockfish' Nd4 line and checks that the pawn is taken later.

I have no objection to LLM’s—not even a bit. I object only to humans. Yes, we made AI in the first place. We also advanced it a lot. We made a network system to make it work. We did a ton of things for this stupid thing named ‘Artificial Intelligence’. But it’s high time we stop and think— ‘Is this even useful?’. AI has the power to rule and destroy. Every time you ask AI to do anything, you are telling yourself that ‘Wow! What incredible things it can do!’ We are using AI more than we need. LLM’s weren’t made to do this, they were made to be better at translating what we can’t understand from LC0 and Stockfish and stuff like that. But we are just fires to be kindled with obsession. Pure obsession. Obsession of anything that we get a liking of. Be it science, tech, drugs, AI and anything and everything. And AI is obsessing us for itself. It’s own gain. Humans are not slop. But we have been creating things for the past 6 decades that have turned us into slop. If anyone is using AI to learn anything, just reduce you use it. And if you know someone who uses AI like ChatGPT or Gemini all the time, tell them to stop and think about how different it is from drug addiction. They’ll understand immediately what they have been doing. I repeat this statement - ‘LLM’s are not slop. Humans are not slop. Humans have created things that are not slop. The things that humans have made are turning humans into slop. Now humans are blaming that the things that are not slop are slop.’ We have turned ourselves into slop. That is our problem. We think that we are always right. All we need is that for one day we tell ourselves to stop AI for just one day. Then we’ll understand what we need to do.

And just to spam even more with my unsolicited opinions, slop is safe! Maybe it's correlation and not causation that so many brilliant people end up having mental disorders,

but you can't argue that there is (me - did you mean isn't?) a higher incidence of mental disease in technical domains that require consistent reasoning and true intelligence. Chess being one of them.

What happens? Brains crack! They are not designed for that kind of work. You push them too hard into this unfamiliar territory of pure abstract reason and they malfunction.

Sounds like a stereotype. Do their brains crack? Where's the evidence that working with pure abstract reason causes this? Chess players cracking is not common at all. Just a few examples brought out ignoring all the others who didn't have outward evidence of mental disorders. Some even falsely claim that Morphy 'went crazy' (false) trying to play into the stereotype.

Slop on the other hand? It's "environmentally friendly". Uses almost no energy. Just recycle what someone else said.

Recycling or Plagiarizing?

Even better if a machine says it, because you can either pretend machines are not supposed to get things wrong or you can blame them for your lack of effort. But hey, at least your brain remains intact!

Would your brain remain intact if you grew up in a world where everything was AI Slop? Even now AI Slop is being used for brainwashing people, their brains certainly didn't remain intact.

Well, very, very true. I can’t imagine how the world would be that way. AI is truly the definition of laziness and plagiarism. AI wasn’t designed to be made into slop or something. We turned ourselves into slop and the blamed AI so much that AI is now said to be slop.

better for us more upcoming 400's who are lazy to study from books and follow this advice and more real competition.
P.S. the people who claim to not have money for books can just get them on annas archive or libgen, like i did, coming from being broke

Dam if they wouldn't stop, then I will be ragebaiting because we need human like you and other people playing chess

Not the AI coming to do the job for us

We are NOT letting AI with chess

I 100% agree that AI Slop is the worst. One day at tech class, I asked for a cat and AI gave me a cat with two tails.

This is one of those subjects AI's are bound to fail in ;). Great work @RuyLopez1000, love more articles like this from you :')

see i thind you should not learnfrom bots beacuse your opponent will also learn from bots sothis is why you looses in chess you shold have a human coach instead of computer

you should nver relay on boats move see you should learn from a coachbeacuse bot teaches you move for short term and for long term a coach is best and like other super GMs they have a coach so learn from coachinstead of a computer AI

AI is forgetful and stupid, constantly needing nudging to remember the past like an amnesiac that requires millions to build and maintain. This blog is brilliant and much appreciated! @RuyLopez1000 thank you! Ps: this post is not made by AI
