I'm guessing he missed Bg2 (or Be2) and thought he was losing material. Although even then, Bxg4 and the game is far from over, so a very strange decision indeed. Actually, Rg1 also looks pretty strong, since after ...Bxf3, there's Rg8+ Kb7 h7 and White wins.
