why did they stop?

The 1984 World Chess Championship match between Anatoly Karpov and Garry Kasparov was stopped by Florencio Campomanes, the president of FIDE, after 48 games and over five months of play. They stopped because the unique "first to six wins" format caused extreme physical and mental exhaustion, leading Karpov to lose roughly 22 pounds, prompting an unprecedented termination without a winner.

Kasparov found Karpov's weaknesses and won the last few games. This threatened to defeat the champion, so the referee stopped the match.
