- Ruy Lopez (Ruy Lopez)
Moves: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5
This is one of the deepest and most studied openings. White immediately puts pressure on the c6-knight, which defends the central e5-pawn.
Goal: Create long-term pressure on the center and prepare for castling.
Characteristics: Leads to complex strategic maneuvers. Popular responses for Black are 3... a6 (Improved Defense) or 3... Nf6 (Berlin Defense).

"All about the Spanish Party"
- This is certainly not 'all' about the Ruy Lopez.
"White immediately puts pressure on the c6-knight, which defends the central e5-pawn."
- It is often said that way, but not really true.

"... Playing the Exchange Variation requires far less theoretical knowledge than the 4 Ba4 main lines ... Equalising against the Exchange Variation seems to be an easier task than against 4 Ba4 but this remains a sensible system for players who like endings or have little time or inclination to study theory. ..." - IM John Shaw (2003)

Yeah I don't think there's a point in doing the Spanish if you're just going to do the exchange variation. Just choose a different opening at that point.
