Lichess v2 is here

Agree with "facts"? What facts? It is subjective. All change will be scrutinized. Old habits die hard. " Fact is" the new interface is an improvement in many ways. If it was the Original and another rewrite was made, you'd all be complaining that v2 was better. Give it some time to work out issues, but all in all, I like the new interface. I'd suggest the ability to resize the left/right side boxes , but hey, not complaining here. Good Chess All ! (perhaps the "blue color" was a bit overdone ... the contrast is overboard)

Just a simple question...Why was Q&A page removed? Can't find it anywhere.

@DeepFlight If @LegendaryStrikeX has read most of the messages in this thread concerning V2 (which I have read all of them except for possibly missing one or two his "facts" might have something to do with what is being said by most people.

I applaud your devotion and confidence in the providers, in that you prefer not to count what you're actually seeing, but what you'll see after V2 is fixed, but he may be thinking about actually being able to use the site now.

Many of the people who won't dare complain are saying they like V2 because they are finding out that they can make it look like V1.

There's a chance that V2 might come to resemble V1 more and more, or at least have the option for the users to be able to easily configure their features to resemble what they actually like.

I know that without a doubt V2, V3 and all the future versions will leave V1 in the dust.

If you allow the users to express what they like, some of what they like can possibly make it into the working version. Of course when V2 starts working people would forget about V1.

LegendaryStrikeX might clarify to you what he meant, provided that he might feel you won't think he's whining and complaining and speaking ungrateful. If it were me, I would clarify what might be positive feedback.

I'm not seeing messages where people are complaining about change. I might be missing something. But I'm seeing feedback about actual lost of functionality.

Of course there are some differences that I'm noticing such as some removal of some redundancy, whereas you get to some things by going through the profile menu, rather than an extra unneeded item taking up space. When people ask how to get to a feature, someone is providing the answers about the new and convenient layout.

But when it comes to some things like out of proportion fonts and components... now while many hours are spent in tuning the system, is the best time to get the feedback of what is missing.

By the way, I have learned a lot about using the forum. It's pretty nice except for a feature to skip to the bottom. I recently learned that there are notices when the topics you are subscribed to (by posting) that you can click, which takes you to where you left off.

The one thing I can't figure out how is how to search the forum. I'm sure it'll come.

In the meantime, I appreciate getting to know some of the other members by following this topic and having friendly interaction.

v2 results when changes are made to just make a change & no reason.

v2 results when changes are made to just make a change & no reason.

@weakestofall

The main reason was to make the site responsive, and that is a very valid one.
Of course, what we users mostly see is little gimmicks like the new blue/green colors etc., it's harder to appreciate the big changes that where done under the hood.

I have to admit that I was one of the people who immediately adjusted zoom (to 80% in my case) to get the "v1 feel" back, and so I didn't have much to complain layout-wise. I also use an up-to-date browser, which obviously helped, too. However I fully agree that both of these concerns (scaling, browser support) have not been handled perfectly.

Now that I have switched back to 100% out of curiosity, the whole thing doesn't look that bad honestly. It's really just different and one has to adapt for a while.

I can also see the point that not supporting very outdated browsers is kinda doing these users a favor by pushing them towards more secure options. And of course, we cannot expect a donation-funded project to test against every exotic user setup.

The main mistake, in my opinion, was thus communication. The v2 announcement blog post was way too happy and optimistic. Understandable from the dev perspective, but obviously not very satisfying for many users. There should have been more advice on how to make the transition smoother (was manual zoom even mentioned?), and a more compassionate explanation for forced hardware/software upgrades (the cost factor is not negligible for all).

In short, "V2 is very cool and we can work out unforeseen problems together" instead of "V2 is very cool, and your initial problems are mostly meaningless".

There are many things to fix, but all in all this is one of the best online chess sites. So yes of course you can speak about what was wrong what was right but the lichessteam needs a little bit more time to fix all the issues. Thats at least my opinion.

Cheers,
Simli

Despite all glitches and performance issues that I had to experience after v2 update, currently it feels like responsiveness and usability are back to excellent playing chess is fun again!

The only thing I had to do to achieve comfortable gameplay is to customize CSS - mainly I set Roboto Mono for shot clock, adjusted red background when clock is low and reduce size and width of the right panel. If you wonder how it looks now - https://i.ibb.co/d7yknXQ/Timout-lastmove.png, also you can see here the glitch that occurs when I'm down on the clock and barely in time to make a move as all of sudden lose on time (as you can see on the screenshot my move is last), but it seems like the glitch is gone now.

@ProfDrHack I totally agree with your post especially about the upgrade cost from Vista not being inconsiderable in both time and money.

I bought a very fast and bang up to date machine in 2009 and was very pleased with it. It works now (except for Lichess and steam) exactly as it did then.

I use it for email and chessbase and for running our club web site as well as for Microsoft Office and geneology programs.

The time let alone the cost of updating is now out of my reach and inclination. I have purchased a Windows 10 Laptop for use at our chess club where we demonstrate to the juniors on the conference room television screens. The change in Lichess format is another time cost in re-learning Lichess for slick demonstrations as are some of the screen size changes so we may revert back to Chessbase. This will probably result in a lowerup take by juniors in our club of Lichess.

It is very unlikely the loss of Lichess will encourage me to change from Vista which has served me well and safely for all this time so in other words v2 just means the loss of one user which from other posts on the forum by patrons on this site does not matter.

Its a shame though.
