Can someone explain why this is ?

Currently, about 85–90% of competitive FIDE-rated chess players are men, while only 10–15% are women.
What could possibly be the reason.....

Chess has historically been a male-dominated sport, women just aren't used to competing in chess.

True but.....stem fields also used to be male-dominated.....But women are the majority now if im not mistaken .....so ....why not chess...

Because chess is a competitive sport, unlike stem.

Because chess is a competitive sport, unlike stem.

Because chess requires a lot of travelling and people are concerned about women's safety. Girls face a lot of pressure to build a stable and safe career meanwhile men are a lot lot comfortable exploring options. Chess is a gamble if one considers pursuing it professionally considering women are expected to have a stable career before marriage. Apart from that, there are more similar reasons.

Yeah and to mention there's a large difference in how women's chess is showed in media along with the difference in prize money, titles - so eventually it's far less competitive than men's chess. Ridiculous is the fact people still say women are weak at chess when you haven't even seen the full potential.

mostly because are less girls/women interested on playing chess. And this not just chess alone there are lot activities with lop sided distribution. Combat sports is another example but there are others.

I didn't know you need testosterone to move chess pieces ....if so..... wouldn't guys who are over 40 or 50 be affected by it...I mean if your theory is true..... there should also be very few senior men

I mean....women are in a lot of historically male dominated sports ....and chess has been there......forever.....is there something about chess that is off putting to women....
