It depends on the noise... Playing in a full stadium would be fine for me, but a single person speaking is disturbing, ESPECIALLY if the he utters words like Check, Matt, Fork, Bishop, Rook, a3, c7, d-file, or any other word that might reasonably be part of my internal move dialog, even if it has zero relevance to my game.

I personally like to play either in complete silence or with classical music in the background. It's difficult for me to focus on the game when people are talking, particularly when I can hear what they're saying as opposed to the conversation just being background noise.

Silence is golden.

Silence is golden.

Some people like to listen to music when playing, I listen to music only while playing quick games, faster than 3 min or so, where I won't be calculating much. Maybe classical music would be good for slower games, but i haven't tried listening to classical music.

I trained in a steel mill, background noise often over 80 db. Now I'm deaf in one ear. Yes, silence is golden, but go ahead and do your worst.

When I'm playing chess I like to listen to instrumental music or pop music, it helps me focus and focus only on the game. I only listen to pop songs that I like and know well or else I get distracted by the lyrics. If I'm playing with my friends I really dislike when they keep suggesting bad moves or just talk in general, it distracts me too much.
