I have written the rules of my chess variant Proposal Chess here. Please play test this variant (if possible) and provide me feedback about your experience. Below is a TLDR of the rules.
TLDR
Proposal Chess is a chess variant designed to reduce the impact of opening preparation.
Before the game begins, each player secretly proposes a starting position for one board. On each board, the opposing player chooses which side they wish to play from that position. The game is then played on both boards simultaneously.
This “proposal-and-choice” mechanism prevents players from proposing blatantly favorable positions while still allowing them to steer games toward positions they understand well. Because each player proposes one board and chooses on the other, the format is fully symmetric.

But if one side can "propose" the starting position - surely then can prepare for that position?!

But if one side can "propose" the starting position - surely then can _prepare_ for that position?!

Yes, the proposer preparing for that position is the point, they have to only prepare for that one position and nothing more (there is not much point preparing for what your opponent will propose as your opponent can propose one of gazillion positions). This does not give the proposer any advantage in the overall game as both players are proposers on exactly one board and has to face the proposed position of their opponent on the other board. That is why I used the word 'reduce' instead of the word 'eliminate'. Hope, that clarifies things.

People would study openings even more, in order to guarantee they win their proposed positions. Games would be even more stale, the person that chooses the board will almost be guaranteed to win the position. it would be fair, but it would get very long boring and lengthy, I win my proposed position , you win yours, and it will take a long time before someone beats their opponents proposed position, which might not even be possible at higher levels
