I stopped enjoying chess after years of playing

It isn't because chess is bad or about venting lichess cheaters.
Mostly because I changed.
Chess requires a commitent, you need to solve puzzles, analize games, learn new things, and most importantly energy for thinking.
I have none of that, I have college and already I'm doing intelectual things, like higher level math and physics or programming, so appeal for another intelectual subject is low. But because I'm not willing to commit I'm rapidly losing elo, with isn't suprizing at all.
So I'm at the point, of zero interest at chess, I don't need another intelectual subject, with requires a commitent.
Should I quit chess for a year?
It is not fun to lose elo.

Elo is correlated with commitment, enjoyment is not.

@Damkiller25 One popular saying in the gaming community goes "You never quit Minecraft, you just take breaks." -- I think the same applies to chess.

That being said, you can still enjoy chess. As sirma @lizani said, elo is correlated with commitment , enjoyment is not. You can play casual games from time to time, watch some chess content or you can proceed with your plan to take a break.

I feel like chess is one of those games that you are naturally drawn towards (exurb1a, a youtuber, once said that "Chess is when you microdose infinity", I highly recommended you watch that video) and the passion, the fascination for the game never truly leaves you. So even if you take a break from playing, you might not face such a drastic change... and an occasional casual game or chess composition during the break may help you stay connected with the game.

Chess is only a game while maths is actually useful. If in addition you don't enjoy chess and do enjoy maths, I think maths must be the way to go.

It's okay to stop playing chess, there's no contract that says "you've been playing for xyz years you can't stop now" lol

Classical chess is immortal. It has no rivals. It will survive through my blood line. TBH I thought I would fix my career and then get back to chess. I never did fix my career. :/

@Damkiller25 , I think doing something just because you were doing it in the past is never smart or fun.

I understand the feeling of loss, when you've invested so much into your training and then you feel bad letting it go. But all the training and playing you did were because they were fun. If they're not fun anymore, there are other chapters of your life to explore.

Things you do out of obligation or fear are just baggage.

"Should I quit chess for a year?" You do realise you are asking this some random internet people, which competence to answering any question is doubtful? Also age range of potential geniuses here knowing everything is from probably 10 to 60 years old...
This kind of question you answered already by yourself, all what you need is in your own post.

'I have two vocations: chess and engineering.
If I played chess only, I believe that my success would not have been significantly greater.
I can play chess well only when I have fully convalesced from chess and when the 'hunger for chess' once more awakens within me.' - Botvinnik
