in my opinion, Tal is the best. Because he beat Kasparov in his peak in only 18 moves while Tal was sick (1 month after the match he died). Imagine he beat Kasparov while he: 1. Sick 2. Old (55 years) 3.Only 18 moves 4.The opponent was kasparov in his peak (1992). At that tournament, kasparov only lose once. By Tal.

Imagine if Morphy actually liked Chess, and you gave him the 170+ years of theory that followed him...
The truth is every generation of Chess Great owes something to the previous generations.

Would it be even possible? Would someone with his chess style be able to handle engine telling him "Oh, yes, you crushed your opponent with your attack but only because they didn't know how to defend it properly, it was actually unsound." And, more important, would he be so great against today's generation of players who are much more skilled defenders and who no longer feel declining a gambit or sacrifice is something below their dignity? Would someone like him be able to enjoy today's top level chess with its draw ratio and need for extensive prep?

What I want to say is that while Morphy was a perfect player (or close to it) for the era he lived in. But I doubt his approach would work well today.
