Is carokann or sicillian better?

I wouldn't recommend Caro-Kann to beginners, because it usually leads to rather passive positions. I used it because my dad had an old Caro-Kann book and it seemed like a cool thing do, but I think I lost many games without getting much anything out of them. To play it successfully you need to be at a level where you're comfortable holding a solid pawn structure without giving much to your opponent either. Sicilian is a much attacking option.

"Sicilian is a much attacking option."

  • For white. White gets a lead in development and more control over the center.
Black gets the better pawn structure for an endgame.

Well black usually gets a nice counterattack via the c-file if white castles long with ideas that are maybe easier to find and execute than white's.

But I agree that playing e5 to 1. e4 is usually the best for both learning and results. All other options give white the initiative. But pretty much any opening is playable that gives you active pieces. Few games are decided in the opening, pretty typical that both players have had a theoretical winning position at some stage.

there are many sicillians its as if sicillian equalises better and caro-kann doesnt equalize but is closer to equal if opponent plays perfect
