I got so far also because chess was my choice and my passion. I was effectively supported by my parents and trainers, but not pushed hard to fulfill their ambitions. The latter has led many talented youngsters to quitting chess.
Yes, seeing some (thankfully rare) parents at children tournaments, I can't help thinking: "By the age of 13, at the very latest, this guy is going to hate both chess and his father." But I don't think chess is specific in this regard, I'm afraid you would see the same pattern in sports or music. And, sadly, sometimes even from coaches who definitely should know better.

The kids have to handle it by themself and then the parents just support otherwise it becomes a bondage
