maia doesn't seem to emulate humans really well, or even close

It was winning by far and then just decides to throw a clown move at me. I know this is what chess engines on low settings tend to do but an AI "humanlike" (yea rite) bot one expects more from? And they're afraid AI will take over the world, um, create chaos maybe but don't place too much stock in its abilities.

Try playing the more advanced maia3 bots and report back. Supposedly much better at mimicking human play,

Here on lichess you can challenge the rating of your choice as @maia3-79m_1000 and so on

It doesn't look like a completely random move.
The bot was trained on games between 1000-rated players. On that level, blundering a backrank mate tactic is still common.

Yes but the previous moves were definitely not 1000 level, just a mix of hard and easy. More difficult settings are like playing stockfish 5-8 like on lichess "play the computer"
