'Above all else, before playing in competitions a player must have regard to his health, for if he is suffering from ill-health he cannot hope for success. In this connection the best of all tonics is 15 to 20 days in the fresh air, in the country.' - Botvinnik

Nutrition, sleep, and physical exercise are important.

Training games are good, but only if with exactly the same time control as the tournament.

Mind control is very important in OTB. Project a confident air. Move pieces with a flourish and put them down like every move is a winning one. Stay emotionless and poker faced. Take your time over moves.

Let's see-- what I recall people telling me is .....
Get a good night sleep.
Urinate before rounds.
Eat light,
coffee but not enough to get jittery.
Sit on your hands to avoid impulsive moves.
Analyze details on your move, consider the general positional features on your opponents.
TRy to analyze your game with your opponents afterwards.
Be patient if your opponent seems stronger than their rating--eventually their level will show.
and
have fun!
