Hi, I have been playing the Caro for years, I played the main lines for the most part, aiming for solid positions. As I play otb I would like to expand my repertoire a little bit. I know that the Caro is more than rich enough for me to play it exclusively, but I would like to learn something completely new. Any suggestions for what I can try? I consider my strategic understanding and endgame play to be my biggest strengths, I usually play ok tactically too, but I’m not exactly aiming for super sharp positions. I consider dynamic play is probably my weakness. I prefer a static position where I have a clear pawn break or some other strategic objective. Looking forward to hearing some suggestions for what might suit me as an alternative to the caro! Just don’t tell me to play the French xd
Karpov played as black 259 games Caro-Kann, 330 games with the closed Ruy Lopez, and 88 games with the Sicilian with 2...e6.
Thanks. Think an e6 Sicilian is best then. Learning the entire three after 1 e4 e5 is probably not a good use of my study time if it only will be used occasionally. I’m rated 2000 fide so tactics, tactics and more tactics should probably be my main priority. And analysis of the games I play otb, I’m not good enough at that though.
The Petroff - not that many critical variations and very solid. Look at the games of Chinese GMs and Bluebaum.
The petroff is a great suggestion too! I never tried it despite it seems perfect for me. People otb already tell me straight up that my stile is boring, now those people will lose their minds! I already thoroughly enjoy analysing Bluebaum games
If you don't mind the boredom, then the Petrov's Defense.
Equalish, boring to tears; you can't do anything; White can't do anything, and it's a favorite of GM Fabiano Caruana.
Con: Common; your opponent can transpose to the For Knights Game and to the Italian Game.
The Alekhine Defense is good, practically, if White chooses to overextend.
A dragon formation with your knights on the queenside putting pressure.
Pro: Rare; I checked it a lot as a former e4 player; there's nothing fun or good against it (imho).
Con: Opponent can play something that isn't fun for you either.
Nimzowitsch Defense:
Pro: Very rare, similar to Caro-Kann.
Cons: I don't know anything about it; I'm only suggesting it.
[e5 + Nc6 is idiotic - you need to know 5 different openings and tons of gambit refutations.]
[e5 + d6 = Philidor Defense is weak; see Alex Astaneh's lecture on YouTube].
Good luck!
Really appreciate this! I’m already excited for my boring Petroff games! I really like your other suggestions as well! Both the Alekhine and Nimzovic are off beat and also could fit my style. Will definitely keep those in mind too, but I only have time for 1 at a time. Thanks again for your well thought out response. Your suggestions are spot on
A great choice, Petter.
- The Cochrane and Stafford gambits are nonsense.
- According to GM Anish Giri, the best way to fight the Petrov is the Modern Attack: 3.d4.
From my experience, if they play 3.Bc4 (Italian Variation), then a great fun is to play d5 (in Lichess they play exd5, not Bxd5; then you play e5-e4, followed by Bd6, having all the fun).
Godspeed.
I will look briefly at the Cocrane gambit, black is the one who chooses to enter the stafford so I don’t think I need to think about that.
