Silman's Complete Endgame Course

#61

Yes, and Rc8 actually loses.

"1... Rg6 doesn't lose: it's the typical Philidor endgame move"

  • With the white rook on h2 1...Rg6 is OK, but with the white rook on a2 as in the earlier edition 1...Rg6? loses.
Apparently some errors got corrected in later editions and apparently some list of errata exists.

Back in 2020, numlock1812 was apparently looking at an edition of the book where the white rook started on a2 instead of h2. (See #57, https://lichess.org/forum/general-chess-discussion/silmans-complete-endgame-course?page=6 .)

If the white rook starts on a2, then Black does indeed lose after 1...Rg6 2 e6+ Rxe6 3 Ra7+.

If the white rook starts on a2, then Black does indeed draw after 1...Rc8.
In my edition of the book, the white rook starts on h2, as described by MatthewLikesChess. From the rook-on-h2 position, 1...Rg6 does indeed obtain a draw for Black, and 1...Rc8 loses (to 2 Rh7+).

It would seem that, somewhere along the way, corrections were made in the book.
