You might be interested in checking out https://lishogi.org/ which is developed by the same people who created lichess and is for Shogi, a particularly interesting regional variant of chess that comes from Japan. It is unique among regional chess variants in that when you capture a piece it becomes part of your army and you can spend a turn to place it on the board.
