Is Gukesh the next Magnus?
Is Gukesh the next Magnus?
Is Gukesh the next Magnus?
We will see in the Sindarov-Gukesh World Championship match.
Was Magnus at 20 stronger than Gukesh is now? Undoubtedly, Magnus at 20 topped the FIDE list and was winning supertournaments while Gukesh is struggling to be in the top ten.
But, there's no rule that says a world champion must be as good or better than his predecessor. In the last hundred years, we've only had a handful of exceptional champions - Carlsen, Kasparov, Karpov, Fischer, Alekhine, Capablanca. You were lucky to witness an era dominated by one of the greatest players of all time.
Magnus now would destroy Gukesh now. Magnus at 19 would destroy Gukesh now (Gukesh is currently 19).
Magnus is the best player in the world. Period. The fact that he retired the world champion title doesn't change that.
If he said in 2028 "you know what? I'm low on money right now, so I'll win the candidates and the world championship for money" he'd win the candidates, and he'd win the world championship.
"Magnus now would destroy Gukesh"
