Why do some chess players progress exponentially while others plateau?

I discover chess when I was 8 years old. And I was really starting chess online since 3 years ago. And i have noticed many things about the progression of this game.

Certain person progressing very rapidly and other staging. And the real question, how we can explain we don't have the same evolution of progression to other “Classic Game” For example in poker on even in the video game ?

The main reason why I have this interrogation concerning my "inner circle of chess" we are in this circle approximatively 30 persons. And i am the second weakness person on this server. And I have not a bad level !

I have on my best score reaching 1850 ELO chess.com in rapid.

And the repeating thing i had notice it's the tremendously progression of new player can reach in least of one year 2000 ELO !

So how we can explain this thing ? Because if we follow the rule of number of hours played, normally I was reached a better level !

Because i have more experience.

I can understand an important thing. The quality of studying is very important and I can take argument ! But I make multiple problem, i analyze my game and I try to lean an important thing concerning chess.

I know my question it's not very clear ! But i want to have discussion with the more experiment player and understanding why certain person have literally an exponential progression !

So don't hesiting to respond of my post : )

Simple answer - chess is more complex than poker or video games.
Not everyone has the combination of talent, dedication and aptitude to keep progressing. The higher the rating the more work you have to put in.

"new player can reach in least of one year 2000"

  • Yes, if you do the right things and refrain from the wrong things then 2000 in 1 year is feasible.

"number of hours played"

  • Number of hours played does not matter. More number of hours analyzed lost games.

"i analyze my game and I try to lean an important thing concerning chess."

  • Shortcut: analyze lost games only, but thoroughly.

A great help is to enable move confirmation in your profile.
Think about your move. Play it. Check it is no blunder: does not lose any piece or pawn or runs into checkmate. Confirm.

Many chess affectionate radicalists will try to distinguish chess using this criterion, but there is actually a very simple and definitive answer :

Video games and other games like poker are actually the exact same as chess. Just think about the casual/competitive terminology, if you are in gaming circles you would be extremely familliar with the concept that some players plateu ( casuals ) and other players improve rapidly ( competitive/serious ). You may not see the difference, but as a video gamer, I have experience

And this disparity actually comes from people taking the game casually, nonchalatly, where they don't care about the game VS people who take the game seriously - every player is not trying their best to improve, those who want to improve will improve, those who don't, won't.

Any other difference is because chess uses the ELO system, and other games use other systems, we mispercieve it because of elo system. For example, the elo system the gap between 0 to 1200 can be done in a month, but 1200 to 1800 is more, 1800 to FM or NM is maybe a whole decade.

Any anomalous result you found is an observation of the elo system and you will find the same results in a game with the same elo system, it's more about the elo system than about chess.

There's nothing special about chess - as chess players, we have the duty to not overzealously glorify our game beyond the extent it deserves to prevent our own delusion.

Some players work harder and on better things.
That's all there is to it.

You really have to look at it like kids in schools. Not one looks the same, nor do they act the same or have the same goals. The school marks are not the same. Why in the world would you assume chess or pool or cards or welding or carpentry would have anything common as progress? Even artists do not progress at the same rate. Even cars driving on the highway, when they start following too close, cause an accordion effect between cars.

We all plateau and some even loss motivation.
