Why does Lichess have fewer players than chess.com?

Obviously Lichess is better since it's completely free.

And many of my friends are playing chess on Duolingo, a language learning app.

As a Lichess player, I think it’s because Chess.com is more popular/famous.
Lichess’s YouTube Account is nothing compared to Chess.com’s
in terms of views and subscribers.

It is 100% free, it just has costs for the people running it, but you don't need to donate to enjoy the site fully.

i hate when someone says that. chess.com is free too.......i didnt try it for 8 years because they said its not free. only then i figured i liked bughouse.

wrong. some portion of the players NEED to pay or it goes to ruin. so it's not free for all.

I guess that's a good point, but I think you're missing the point of "free." Free means "not costing or charging anything." Lichess charges no-one, so I think it's fair to call it free.

Chess.com is NOT free. Limited lessons, 3 puzzles only a day, 1 puzzle rush or puzzle battle, to play specific bots, and much, much more. Chess.com is only good with variants, nothing else.
Nobody NEEDS to pay, they do it out of their own free will.
