why is e3 considered passive but e4 e6 not ?

one thing i noticed right now is that if one plays e6 one can later play d5 , if one plays e5 one needs later to play d6 so black ususally can only move one of the center pawn two squares ( besides d4 for example austrian defense ) so my question maybe was a bit stupid.

White is not the same as black.
As white, why not occupy the centre by 1e4 or 1 d4? Yes, you can play 1 e3 but it's more passive. After 1 e3 e5 2 d4 exd4 3 exd4 d5 take a guess which opening you've landed in.
As black, a move behind why not challenge the centre by 1 e4 e6 intending d5?

true but would it be the best move or would a more centre attacking move be better

what about the sicilian defense

what about the sicilian defense

no that wasnt ai and ya thats the reason e6 takes center with d5 as white has center a strike preparing but e3 is useless cus u can go d4 anyways an noone gonna take u but e6 to go d5 without take

1 e3 is fine. Nimzovich played it to win the 1929 Carlsbad Tournament.

Who said e4 e6 is not passive?

Who said e4 e6 is not passive?

i mean its a common opening at the top and sometimes even in computer chess we know there is no passivity in those places

There is a difference between, 'passive' and, 'defensive.'

(@)tpr: '1 e3 is fine.' ~ Correct. 1. e3 takes good and bad things from 1. b3 and 1. Nf3.

A good thing: With 1. e3 instead of 1. b3, White keeps Qb3 possible, as well as the option of playing the Hedgehog's sister setup---1. e3 d5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. c4 e6 4. cxd5 exd5 5. Be2 Bf5 6. Qb3 Qc8 7. d3 c6 8. Bd2 Nbd7 9. Bc3 Bd6 10. Nbd2.

A good thing: By delaying Nf3, White keeps f4 as a possibility.

A bad thing: 1. e3 is less flexible than 1. Nf3, and it does not allow a quick Bb2 to take the diagonal before Black gets a chance to.

'Nimzovich played it to win the 1929 Carlsbad Tournament.' ~ A good player winning with a strategy does not mean that the strategy is good (or fine); it just means that they won with it. You could win a tournament with the Grob if you got lucky with your pairings, your opponents are a lot weaker, or you just played better than them.

Singular tournaments are different from consistent results that take decades to form.
