Help improve study navigation, search, and organization!

First an aside - thanks to everyone who gave thumbs up/down in the local analysis topic. Lichess heard your voices... Now they let you provide the compute and analyse games on your device! Yay for the community!

I've heard many complaints over the years that, even though studies are awesome, it can be hard to manage them. Perhaps @CheckRaiseMate said it best in this blog.

This new PR tries to change things for the better. The proposed study database feature is rather complex and needs a lot of new code, so I anticipate a chilly reception from Lichess. They really don't want all the features. In all likelihood, this will not happen without your support (just like local analysis)

Visit the PR link and play with Study Database on the demo site (gamblej.org) using one of the logins provided in the PR description (the logins are needed because each has a large number of spam studies to play with).

Let me know what you think. Give a thumbs up or thumbs down on this post because Lichess listens to those reactions. And any horror stories or love letters about the existing study search and management UI are welcome below.

People have been asking me to add something like this to LiChess Tools for years! I just didn't have the proper APIs to make it work well.

Initially I was thinking of using the study tags as folders. This way you get a study that is tagged A and B and you can open folder A and then you have a B and inside is the study. But it gets complicated soon. The folder structure is much nicer. And I LOVE the docking interface. You should transition the entire site to it

I also like the seamless loading of other studies. I think that could enable comment links in studies that would go to other studies. Imagine the @jomega studies linked to each other like that. Awesome!

But I think the biggest improvement for the quality of learning chess is that it essentially eliminates the study chapter limit that was so annoying to a lot of people.

Good job!

  • In this screenshot you can see three windows. Bookmarks and search tabs have been torn into separate windows but you can dock them to another by dragging.
  • On the left, you can see the "my studies" tab. Notice the input text "blit" at the top of that window. Typing here matches the study & chapters below with hilites and direct links.

There's a short video here which shows the whole thing in action.
