Neither preferences nor display seem to have an option to disable the final checkmate visual marker or the winner and loser flags.
Is there a way to disable them currently, not sure if I'm missing something.
There is not. Just try to get used to them.
I also dislike it. Many people dont like this changes. But Lichess try to shadow-ban topics about it, dont hear community, dont answer on questions. It is not right.

Does everything in this world really revolve around money? Has money become the universal measure of everything?
So if Lichess is free, Lichess can be shitty, and we must be happy, because it is free.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. But Lichess have been doing UI and UX worse for last 2-3 years.
Why we cant sign a contract for a technical support from Lichess as shitty Carlsen`s app (take-take-take) did? So they MUST give them technical support for their problem. And on another side, should they hear Lichess users? No. They dont have legal obligations to hear us, to answer our questions, to solve ours problem ans so on.
Lichess no more has rebellious spirit. Lichess like a big corporation now. Lichess really have so many managers, they get sallary and I dont understand what get better since they were hired.
If we really like Lichess, as a Lichess-society we should constructivly criticise it to make Lichess better.

They don't pay that many people. I don't think there are any full-time jobs at Lichess.

There are a few full-timers. And this forum is the place for criticism. Lichess are mostly adults who can tune out paranoia to hear the feedback underneath.
Many agree that the icons are horrible. Thibault merged the PR to make the platform more approachable, and subsequently closed a PR by Serginho that tried to make it an option. This is all in the public GitHub.
