Is this supposed to happen on my phone?

Just today, the problem appeared on my Iphone 7 Plus.

For some reason, the top left corner appeared to be a bunch of links which directs to the features in the old layout.

Is this because of my browser not up to date?

A bit sad to see lichess going this route, a perfectly capable device should continue working in the browser for however long it's still useful to the owner.

It's ok to bump the requirements for the mobile apk version but please offer some solution to legacy devices. (an Android TV Box here, still on Android 5)

I can still play matches on this device right?

Some funcionality like board resizing is gone, so unless they're going to provide a solution for old browsers lichess has just become almost unusable. And nobody forcess an old OSS veteran like me into hardwarde purchases.

I can’t play any games anymore... it won’t allow me to make moves :(

That may be, but the issue is a bit problematic on iOS, since even if you aren't using Safari as your default browser, you're still using Safari, just under a different name.
The problem is that the tools are evolving and Safari is frozen due to a lack of updates.

about Android, there is a small problem
Android versions lower than 7.1 no longer support the website's SSL certificate
This happened suddenly, one day, because Google stopped providing temporary support for the certificate.
The old app even stopped working due to this.

The new app only has official support starting from Android 8 (instead of 7.1) because we no longer have tools to test even older Androids

Outdated browsers are vulnerable to security flaws.

Someone needs to write a standards-compliant browser that runs inside an old browser.
