Why cannot we change our username fully

When the site was first set-up (and before anyone realised it would grow from a university course programming project to a major international site), the database was set up in such a way that the username itself is the nain database key (i.e. thers is no additional hidden identification number, as is common in site designed for large user numbers). This is now imbedded into the base structure of the site, and cannot be changed (short of rebuilding the entire site).
