So i was born in 1957 and things were different back then. Good parenting, be back before dark, pretty much the extent of that. Riding in the back of a pickup, well everyone did it,bicycles, safety gear, you'd have been a weirdo, sure everyone drank out of hoses just had to let it run for a minute, hitchhiking no problem, no body dared to molest a kid back then, new music all the time,it wasn't rock or heavy metal it was rock and roll ( lol i discovered funk and motown and my world was never the same ).
Growing up with Micheal Jackson when he was growing up ( abc123 anyone),good music from the 60s,the moon landing, yeah i watched that live along with the first episode of Star Trek laying on the rug in front of our massive 24" color tv.
It wasn't all good, the Buddhist monk immoliating himself, they wouldn't show that today, soldiers coming back from Vietnam, my BIL was a door gunner and i really didn't understand, war had been romanticized, the good war (as if any wars ever are) yet we had our plastic soldiers and we'd blow them up with ladyfingers... fireworks back then, any kid could buy some bottle rockets ,cherry bombs,m80s ( which i still have a scar from, never attempt to reignite an m80 if the fuse goes out...)
Shit i used to do,man how'd i ever survive, 300" radio tower,sure I'm gonna climb that,i mean it's here I'm here,why not??? I can do it !!! A steep cliff,sure i can do it,what's the worst that could happen...why wouldn't i jump into a quarry,i mean it's just water,80" down.
I don't even know how i survived
There wasn't an app for anything back then
We just did it
And maybe it made us better for it.

Chess clubs were filled with cigarette smoke. Clocks were analog and ticking, no increment. Games were adjourned after 40 moves. Then they were analyzed without engines and resumed the next day.

DAYUM you are so so lucky to have grown up with a legend like him (he'd be a year younger than you I believe, you were born in the same year as my granny btw lol).. feeling guilty to admit that I only know ABC I think from his Jacksons, Jackson 5 etc. eras, I usually listen to his solo songs idk why I've never even tried listening to his earlier songs.. I gotta do it at some point lol

We boomers are a tough breed!
I do remember however, the day my friend had a steel tip 'lawn dart', hit him on the top of his head ! (I didn't throw it) He survived. -:]
p.s. We were playing Lawn Dart Chicken. There was one team in the front yard, one team in the back yard, and we were throwing them over the house at each other! 'Those were the Days' -:]

When I was 4 years old, mom and dad gave me some money for Sunday School. And I was expected to walk down to the church and put it to good use.
I apologize to mom and dad, and (of course) to the Lord. I walked another mile or so farther along and used the money to buy a model aircraft from a store in the exciting "shopping center." I still remember reaching UP to put the money on the counter, as the confused store clerk looked down and around, wondering where my mother was.
Mom was home, probably doing something tasty to a chicken.
Later, when I was 12, I'd jump on a bike and ... just take off. Out and back 45 miles, each way, that first day -- thinking nothing of it. I got back, after hours, and mom asked if I'd had a nice day, and the answer was "yup." Nobody thought anything about it.
Today? I'd not be happy to see a 12-year-old soloing cross-country. We are NOT living in the world I grew up in.
I guess modernity has rubbed off on me, too. I used to ride in the back of a pickup a lot. Now, it would make me uneasy to see a kid doing that. WAY too easy to end up a child-missile flying into a tree.
Have things really gotten a lot riskier? It feels like it. But maybe that's just the natural paranoia of an old wood pusher.
Some things don't seem to have changed, though. I still think dogs are great, and that "Duke" would be a great name for a dog. A male dog, that is. A female I'd probably call something else. Indeed, I'm open to suggestion.
