are there any other climbers here? i’ve been climbing for a few years and really like it, but haven’t met anyone from chess who also climbs. chess and climbing probably have a limited overlap (as they are almost complete opposites lol) so i’m curious if there are any other chess climbers!

I've been a rock climber since I was a little kid a meter high ;)
I think it's kind of similar to chess in a way, actually, but with physical intelligence (is that a term?) instead; you have to plan it out a bit and sometimes make decisions under time pressure of a sort.

yeah, i hadn’t really thought about it but both do require some problem-solving/decision-making (making a plan or positional play in chess vs. figuring out beta in climbing)
weirdly, when i was younger i was pretty scared of heights (and still kinda am) so not sure how i ended up climbing!

With me it was the opposite, I did rather stupid things sometimes because I wasn't scared enough... I remember once, as a child, "free soloing" a tree maybe 25-30 metres up and sitting there on a branch watching the world below me. But of course, since I started climbing I've taken countless falls, which did help to give me a bit more respect for heights (though I must confess, not as much as could be wished).

@CaterpillarArthur
I used to climb in my younger days. Mt
Lemmon is somewhat well known in the climbing world ( at least here in Tucson).

I hand colored this image from the newspaper comics and enlarged it. Thought all you climbers might like it -:]
