I've been feeling really lonely and sad since starting college, constantly down and depressed. I feel like I'm busy every day, yet I barely accomplish anything. I joined a scientific research and innovation project, and I'm constantly worried about my paper.

You must talk to people, this is peak moment for any nerds. You won't have next opportunity.
If it was highschool when it would be better if you were social, but in college is a must, especially if it is elite college, I had great discussions with mathematicans and programmers getting friends is even easier than in highschool

be happy that's the most important thing even if it's abandoning something. But don't do it now, if you like what you do it'll be over in a few yrs

To feel less lonely extracurricular groups with people who share common inteststs can help.
As an IT apprentice at a German university I joined the Linux User Group and a Capture The Flag IT Security group mostly staffed by students but open to any member of the university. As an apprentice I was technically a staff member, so no problem (and the best thing to get me into the cool academic stuff after my apprenticeship which after a lot of time earned me an M. Sc. degree).
To feel less depressed friends might help.
Or even only learning groups with others to have some people around.
It may also be worth it to look into official counselling oportunities that the college might offer.
If the depressed or even only stressed out feeling feels serious see a medical doctor.

In fact, I don't feel lonely or sad simply because I'm without company. As a Chinese college student, I moved over two thousand kilometers from the south to the north to study at a medical university. I find that the people here and the social atmosphere are quite different from those back home. Although I get along very well with my roommate, I often feel isolated. Moreover, there are so many things I need to handle alone, which always make me anxious. This is probably where my loneliness stems from. Recently, I joined an academic club related to medicine at our school, hoping it will help with my research paper and also allow me to make more friends.

However, my ability to communicate with others is severely lacking, and I struggle to engage in natural face-to-face conversations. Whenever I have to interact in person, I become anxious about how the other person perceives me, and I uncontrollably analyze their facial expressions and inner thoughts, which only increases my anxiety. Today, my advisor called me in for a meeting to discuss some matters regarding my thesis. I'm anxious about how my advisor sees me.

No, my home is far from the school—I went over two thousand kilometers away to attend university. Considering transportation costs, I can't afford to travel back and forth between home and school frequently.
