we just had a question like this fyi
67 BC
I would go to when Adam and Eve lived in heaven
I'd like to go back to the 60s and 70s (in Yosemite though, so that's a place also), the Golden Age of climbing...
As long as I didn't have to stay there, I'd say 1964.
The country was still filled mostly with optimism. There wasn't a lot of nonsense being sold as mandatory virtue.
Houses were very inexpensive, although-- admittedly -- you only got what you paid for. But a small three bedroom house with a basement and a one-car garage could be had for not much more than 10 grand.
College was cheap and high schools were mostly helpful and even sufficent.
A young man named Fischer, who didn't care much for school, had just knocked out an astonishing 11-0 in an important American tournament. Petrosian was world champ, but the Soviets already knew Fischer's name. Botvinnik and his crowd didn't miss much when it came to chess.
Young families were having kids. Kids played a lot outside, with each other, energetically.
On the other hand, a kid working in a restaurant was going to start out at less than a dollar per hour. However, that kid would learn to work efficiently and dependably, and begin to value his or her own ability to get things done through steady effort.
Jazz was already well worth listening to, and other popular music was trembling on the brink of getting quite good, temporarily.
Airplanes were already delightful.
And -- prowling the streets? Oh, my.
There was the heart-wrenchingly beautiful Jaguar E-type. There was the eye-arresting new Mustang -- a light, nimble car with a solid V-8. There was the mind-blowing Pontiac GTO (Gran Turismo Obligato) that caused almost every boy who admired James Bond to wish that dad had a more high-paying job. And there was the still-more-lovely Corvette Stingray or the ultimate Bond car -- the Aston Martin DB5.
British cars were bangin' and beloved. Not that there weren't some great Italian cars, too.
There was even the ridiculously under-powered VW bug, which was still much loved and strangely fun and cheery to drive around in.
But even more fortunately, there were no sad, tired, covertly-self-serving attempts -- at least not in the country itself or in Western Europe -- to disparage the country or Western Civilization as a whole.
There were plenty of genuinely, quietly heroic WWII vets around. They were usually quiet about their experiences, but if the moon was full and the time was right, you could hear about what it was like to a face REAL challenge of living though the Great Depression and then giving life-risking service in a crucial cause.
I'm talking about genuine, life-or-death challenge -- not the "struggle" of, uhm, paying somewhat more for gas or not getting our dreams fulfilled by age 25.
But by 1964, the life those vets hoped to protect and grow was arriving and the sun was rising, metaphorically.
It wasn't until much later that pessimism and vague, seemingly constant discontent began not just to form but to become oddly fashionable.
Sure, there were things about 1964 that weren't at all perfect. But the country was fast evolving and improving -- and pretty much everybody knew it, even if some, sadly, didn't care for all of the positive changes. Freedom and individual effort were forging a bright future.
There were some clouds forming, admittedly. A loner who had spent some time away from the West had brought down a popular young president who had loved the country and championed lowering taxes and fighting bigotry. And there were things that genuinely needed some reform -- but in much of the country such reform was viewed with favor and optimism. And that popular young president couldn't have foreseen what his optimistic and well-intentioned foray into Vietnam would eventually bring about.
Interestingly, there are some aspects of 2026 that are surprisingly reminiscent of that long-ago year. But optimism in 2026 is fragile. Too many don't realize what they've got, and seem to think that the best way to lift themselves up is to bring others lower.
I’d go to January/february/march 2026. Made some bad decisions there and I want to redo some actions yk.
