To those who insist on the wrong answer

Given two disjoint sets {a, b} and {c, d}. Take their union—how many elements are in the resulting set? If there are 5, what is the fifth element?

There is no fifth element!

Of course there are only 4.

Guys, why would you question a fifth element? Every set contains Ø or nothing. Therefore, the union of the sets is {a, b, c, d, Ø}

Then it should be {Ø, {Ø}, {Ø, {Ø}}, {Ø, {Ø}, {Ø, {Ø}}}} since everything can be used as nil. {Ø, {Ø}, {Ø, {Ø}}, {Ø, {Ø}, {Ø, {Ø}}}} is equivalent to {a, b, c, d}, while your "a b c d nil" should be {Ø, {Ø}, {Ø, {Ø}}, {Ø, {Ø}, {Ø, {Ø}}}, {Ø, {Ø}, {Ø, {Ø}}, {Ø, {Ø}, {Ø, {Ø}}}}}.

I meant that 2+2=4, not 5.

Then it should be {Ø, {Ø}, {Ø, {Ø}}, {Ø, {Ø}, {Ø, {Ø}}}} since ...

Yes, infinite elements, neither four, nor five, not even 10. Infinite. But I don't think that's the answer high school maths teachers are looking for.
