What if the entire world is united.

I wish we could uninvent nuclear weapons so that there are no superpowers...

Nuclear bombs are a treat, but do you really think that without them bigger economies wouldnt be able to support a bigger army?
If they needed, they could start pumping tanks and other military equipment.

The production of war material is not the issue. Just the budget.

And most of military research has civilian applications. You might not like nuclear bombs, but we have nuclear power plants because of that. We are resting on the shoulders, technologically speaking, of those ww2 researchers.

There were superpowers before nuclear weapons (Nazi Germany), so “uninventing” nuclear weapons would not mean no more superpowers.
Aside from the excellent points from @Alientcp on nuclear power, I also believe that nuclear weapons have brought world peace. If one has a nuclear weapon and another country does too, none would dare attack the other. If they do attack, they both get obliterated. Unlike with tanks or bombs, where one can achieve a decisive advantage with a surprise attack, there are no winners in nuclear war, only losers and whoever was dumb enough to start it.
We have not seen any wars (except if you count the skirmish between India and Pakistan) between nuclear armed nations recently. Only between a nuclear armed country and non-nuclear nation, or between two non-nuclear nations.
With their safety guaranteed, countries can trade more, which would not only enrich themselves but also drastically decrease the use of war. Before, countries traded little and mostly produced their own goods. So if you attacked an enemy and won, you could make away with their resources. But now, you will be sanctioned and your supply chains will be disrupted or destroyed.

"There were superpowers before nuclear weapons"

  • Yes, and wars too, but less devastating than they now can be.

"there are no winners in nuclear war, only losers and whoever was dumb enough to start it"

  • That is true, but a nuclear war may be started by accident, or by action of a deranged leader.

That sounds basically impossible.

The line of research that yields nuclear power generation might have benefited from the war efforts but it is a distinct and different technological application, and might have been developed without it becoming a weapon. Or do you think that nuclear power plants work by detonating atomic bombs?

"might have been developed without it becoming a weapon"

  • No. Without nuclear weapons there would have been no nuclear power.
All development work was done on military budgets for the Manhattan Project.

"do you think that nuclear power plants work by detonating atomic bombs?"

  • No, but the first nuclear reactor was to breed plutonium for the nuclear bomb on Nagasaki.

Granted this is what historically happened. But we don't know how it would have been, if it had not been funded and pushed by the military. Of course it is a game of what-ifs that nobody can ever answer for certain, but I believe it is in the realm of possibility that it might have been independently developed peacefully even if much much later.

"we don't know how it would have been, if it had not been funded and pushed by the military"

  • We do not know, but Germany was the first to try and build a nuclear weapon. Heisenberg failed, mainly because his budget was too low. The Manhattan Project had a budget of $2 billion and 130,000 people worked on it.

Anyway, we cannot de-invent nuclear weapons.
We can only regulate them with treaties like New START.
All countries with nuclear weapons should sign the non-proliferation treaty.
Israel and North Korea have nuclear weapons, but have not signed the non-proliferation treaty.

Sort of. It works under the same principle, nuclear fission. Its a controlled nuclear explosion in a smaller scale at the end of the day. But its not the only tech.

We wouldnt have computers. They were used to decipher codes.

We wouldnt have radar. Jet engines, even duct tape, microwaves, among many other things.

And the space war produced cordless tools, giving birth to all the battery powered tools we have now.

Like it or not, a lot of our current tech is based of those military minded weapons of destruction.

"a lot of our current tech is based of those military minded weapons of destruction"

  • True, but those same military minded weapons of destruction can destroy all of our current tech and most or all human life on Earth.
