its a symbol. in one raality its on the book cover of bastians book. in another reality its a necklace - today it would be something like the "hand of the king pin" - given by the childlike empress to her champion, atreyu. if you believe in the words or the symbol they eventually become true. for everyone else its just a symbol or a piece of metal without much inner value nor any magick. thats my interpretation, but i guess people could fill books about the meta meaning of such stuff.
