Is it time to get a professional chess coach?

Hey there!
I have reached an fide rating of 1510 and for the last i think 5/6 years i have taught myself to play chess with no coaching. Now o want to like become a CM and break into 2100 rating. So should i get a chess coach for helping me out?

If you're serious about becoming a titled player then some master coaching wouldn't hurt - ideally an NM or above who can share their experience of going from candidate to master

Coaches are a big investment of time and money

Now if you don’t have a lacking of either then go ahead

But before getting a coach find out what you need to fix

This can be rather simple

Ask yourself questions such as

  1. do I do well with tactics

  2. do I make strategic plans

  3. do I know a good enough amount of opening theory

  4. do I study my endgames well enough

  5. do I lose games just because of time trouble

  6. how am I dealing with pressure

  7. how much time am I spending studying/playing

If any of 1-4 have no as an answer then see what you can do for yourself

5 and 6 are different kinds of problems that may be making a large impact on your game even though you posses all the skills

If you aren’t studying as much as you think you should be then don’t get a coach, get yourself to work

If all of these are things that you think you have done your best on then maybe it is time to get a coach

Keep in mind there are a lot of free resources that are of high quality that can help you just as much

Also depending on your age it might just take some time for mind development

I’ve noticed that I’ve taken huge leeps in chess simply because I just mentally developed more

It's probably only worth it if you are super serious and if you think it will work. The real improvement doesn't come from the coach but from your application of that knowledge.

Regardless of coaching I suggest you make a habit out of analyzing your games in detail, figuring out as many useful details as you can...
And there is so much good free content you can absorb. Highly recommend IM Andras Toth's free videos on youtube. In particular The Amateur's Mind playlist, Inside My Head playlist, and Private Lessons With Students playlists. Plus all the random videos like "A simple trick to endgame mastery" etc
