They are called "flairs", you can set them in your settings. They don't have a particular meaning. Pick whatever you like, or don't use one at all.

No I don't want to talk about flairs, I mean the other new logo you can see near your name in the home page.

Lots of websites use an icon that looks like that which users should click on if they want to find personal information about themselves or to log out. It makes this site a bit more standardised in that respect.

i just noticed it too.. at first i thought it was a placeholder for a profile pic but doesn't seem to be the case.

So what's the use of that ?

Ah this one.

As pointed out, it makes it more obviously to locate yourself - including your profile, your settings, etc. Similar things are used across many platforms.

As for the color - for me it looks exactly the same as my username. (Safari on Mac).

Given that the upper menu now has that profile logo to the right of our username, would we be able to have an option to disable the display of our username when logged in?

This would be useful because when showing other people in person (at a tournament, or chess club, etc) saved studies or even the analysis board on a phone, we might not wish to so readily reveal our Lichess usernames.

Right now, the most reliable method to avoid such a situation is to open a saved study in a private browser window, and a more unreliable workaround is to scroll down a little bit to hide the top menu, although this second method can be risky when it comes to "self-doxxing".

This might also ultimately mean that fewer users will feel the urge to create a second more private account.
