You can play sub-optimal moves as White in the opening but still expect to reach equality. Chess is a draw anyway and 1 c3 can be taught as a Caro-Kann or a Slav a move up, or as a tranpositional tool…

It is because Lichess has no way to know whether the position you have selected for your tournament is favorable for one side or not.
