CWC Suggestions

1st round -- say 16 top rated players are placed in the different parts of the tournament grid, the rest are placed randomly. They play 64 matches (128 players).

2nd round -- from now on there are two grids: with 0-loss players, and with 1-loss players. 32 matches played in 0-loss grid, 32 matches in 1-loss grid. Those who lost 2nd match are dropped out. After the round: 32 players in the 0-loss grid, 64 in the 1-loss grid, dropped out - 32.

round 2.5 -- game are played only in the 1-loss grid. After the round: 32 dropped out (64 in total), 32 players in the 0-loss grid, 32-players in the 1-loss grid.

After round 3 -- 16 dropped out (80 in total), 16 players in the 0-loss grid, 32 in the 1-loss grid.

After round 3.5 -- 16 out (96 in total), 16 with no loss, 16 with 1 loss. And so on.

Advantages:

  1. one dont have to leave the tourney after 1 loss
  2. more competitive matches for stronger players
  3. more matches for weaker players

Very interesting format, never heard of it before. Where did you find this / what is it called?

Hmm maybe this is even better than my suggestion...IDK, very interesting.

That sounds like essentially a double elimination KO - right?

If so, that's one good way to give players a second chance. A complication could be when players lose interest and forfeit their first match, because they stay in the tournament longer and take up more time for the TM to sort out. If you don't expect that to be an issue then it could be good.

If you're planning to use challonge for the knockout bracket, it allows for double elim.

It used to be very popular in beach volley tourneys, mb it is even now, dk. In russian it is called like "till 2 losses", have no idea how it is called in english.
It is good if you face the restriction on the number of courts and time and large number of participants. Dont think it is the issue for chess, you can always just play swiss, but in this particular "match" set-up it could appear to be good.
We can adapt it to "till 3 losses", or some other system. Just have to formulate the criteria first.

OK so, suggestion #2: vsshk wants a double-elimination knockout.

My thoughts: Ah yes, this does seem like a double-elimination knockout. Perhaps indeed this will be followed, but a Candidates tournament needs to be played in my opinion, so we will also cut it at 8 players (maybe at round 5.5, when 4 players with 0 losses and 4 players with one loss will remain).

Thoughts?

I like the double-elimination knockout, and yes it could be cut at 8 players so to allow Candidates

I would prefer 0.5+0 per game, or 1+0 per game. Candidates should be Round-Robin, and to qualify there, people should play a Pent-Elimination, with 2 games per match-up, with a draw favoring the lower rated player.

yeah- i like the double-elimination idea. would the winner of the losers' bracket advance to the final (like they do in tournaments such as the little league world series,) the semis or where along the way?
