Is There a Way to Bypass or Extend the 3,000-Move Limit per Chapter in Lichess Studies?

Is there currently any way to bypass the 3,000-move limit for chapters in Lichess studies, or to extend it to, for example, 10,000 moves or even more?

My opening repertoire is very extensive, and 3,000 moves per color are simply not sufficient, which is why I’m asking. As far as I know, this 3,000-move limit is imposed server-side, is completely outdated, and originates from a different era—the 1990s and early 2000s—when PCs were far less powerful and 3,000 moves in a single file were a real challenge.

Nowadays, however, this should no longer be a problem and shouldn’t cause any performance issues either. Or what is the current situation from the server side? And could Lichess Tools somehow bypass or extend this limit? Or is that basically impossible?

Thank you!

Hi, @Endspiellehrer !

The simple answer is no. This is a server limitation.

The complicated answer is maybe, if you convince Thibault. The best option is to raise an issue on Github and request an increase of the maximum move count in a study chapter.

As you might know, there has been a limit of 3000 for a long time if making moves, but it could have been bypassed by importing a PGN. Then Schlawg fixed this and increased the limit to 5000. And then Thibault decreased it back to 3000. Without public outcry of this indignity nothing will change and Thibault is the person you must convince. Even before, the PGN bypass was a bug, not a feature, and the proper way is that everybody is on board with the current implementation.

Anyway, in order to help people with this, I've added a new functionality in the PGN Editor that splits a big PGN in 3000 moves or less PGNs. Search for the splitForStudy command in the manual.
