Responding to your feedback!

A few days ago I bothered you all with a team message asking for any issues or inconveniences which would make you disable or (God forbid) uninstall LiChess Tools. Here is what I got from you:

  1. There are too many features and they keep coming! This leads to a risky experience when new stuff pops up or Lichess changes something and breaks everything. Even so, there are so many options in Preferences and it's impossible to keep track.

  2. LiChess Tools is great, but sometimes, for various reasons, you want to temporarily disable the extension. Having a very accessible button, keyboard shortcut, timer option or all of the above would help a lot.

  3. Sometimes features meant to help with game analysis sneak up in Correspondence games, thus enabling cheating or at least feeling bad about it.

  4. LiChess Tools adds performance overhead and makes Lichess use more resources or get sluggish.

These are the main issues that I've heard from you, guys! And here is my response:

  1. Unfortunately ( it's terrible! :D )there will always be more features coming. Also I can't control what Lichess does. What I can do is be more careful in testing. Also, I want to add an option that people can select so that any new features and options do not get automatically enabled, even if I believe it would do good to have them enabled by default. Also, I will try to enable less features by default as a rule. This might happen in V3 when I decide to start rewriting it from scratch.

  2. I will add a button/shortcut and even one of those "disable for 2 hours" things so that one can disable/enable LiChess Tools on demand. For me this is already a loss, though, as I feel one should not have to disable it. I would much prefer to fix any issues that makes people feel they need to. Anyway, it was requested and it will happen.

  3. If a feature seems to enable something that it shouldn't, it's a bug! Just report it and I will fix it. Correspondence in particular is a funny thing, because it's like a game, but it allows Explorer, in which I've added a lot of features. I have planned to test more in correspondence. Just remember that any issue you encounter can be solved if you just make it known to me.

  4. Finally, the performance thing. I really am trying to make it as smooth as possible. I have lost count of the days I've been doing profiling and optimizations so that the experience is as smooth as possible. I assure you that version 3 of the extension will start with performance in mind, also it will be more resilient to Lichess updates. Meanwhile, just disable the features that you don't need.

As a general rule, almost everything in LiChess Tools can be turned off, on and up! In the LiChess Tools Preferences page - accessible from the top-right menu - you have a text filter that you can use to find what you need. You can also go to the manual page and (not read it religiously, even if that would help :D) search in the page with Ctrl-F as it is possible you find the feature you need to change to solve your problem. Here is the user manual page: https://siderite.dev/blog/lichess-tools---user-manual

At the bottom of the LT Preferences page there are four buttons:

  • Reset - sets all options to default
  • All off - toggles off all tools - this is persistent, it's not a disable button (which is the FIRST button in the Preferences page)
  • Backup/Restore - save your options as a file and load it if needs be

In other words, you can always turn EVERYTHING off, and then just enable the few things you do like. That will solve problems with performance and unknown behaviors that you can't trace to a particular setting. It's an idea I've had for a while to enable different profiles which contain different sets of options. Let me know if this is something you would like.

In parting, remember that whatever issues you face, I am more than willing to find a solution, but I must first know they exist.

Thanks to all of the feedback! I always want more of that!

Enjoy LiChess Tools!
