v2.4.114 - 8000!!

I've fixed some stuff and adapted to the new Lichess changes:

  • Removed total game duration (it was implemented in Lichess)
    image.png

  • Removed image pasting support from markdown areas where Lichess implemented their own (no delete functionality, I am afraid). The old functionality still can be seen in Inbox chat and Profile bio, where Lichess has not implemented anything yet.

  • Next chapter button is shown as a small blue arrow if "hidden" . When you play an interactive lesson, usually there is a big blue button to go to the next chapter. It was ugly, took a lot of space and was supplanted by the chapter controls (the ones that look like media controls under the chapter list). So I was hiding that button, but that also altered the intention of study creators. Now, when the button is hidden, it is actually replaced with a tiny blue triangle.

  • Themes menu in the user menu - themes have their own submenu in the user menu. You can toggle them and see what the outcome is immediately. Also I will continue to work on very detailed customization, so that one can create their own user styles to control everything from board, to pieces, to sounds.

  • a lot of fixes and translations - thanks to all the people contributing with bug reports and translations

Also, for a brief time of a few days we had 8200 LiChess Tools users, then it dropped to 7800. I don't know that the hell is going on :) But we went over 8000! I hope that's a sign for things to come.

Anyway, I have a huge list of improvements that I've compiled while forced to use Lichess on mobile. The simplest things I've solved already. Don't forget to toggle the Mobile theme and check the mobile specific options in the LiChess Tools preferences if you use mobiles!

And finally there is an idea of adding or integrating Swiss tournament functionality in LiChess Tools, akin to Swiss-Manager, but free, obviously. Yet I have no idea what this actually entails, there is a lot of specialized language and I have no idea what it all means or if anyone would even be interested. LET ME KNOW IF YOU WOULD BE INTERESTED!

That's about it. Will work more on it the next days. Have fun!

If you're ever interested in software for the Swiss system, Sharly Chess (I wrote a blog post about it) is developing very quickly. For example, it's now possible to share results from this software on chess-results.com. This project is supported by the French Chess Federation. Sharly Chess is on the verge of being homologated by FIDE. Its source code is completely open source.

Another, less well-known but very interesting pairing system for club tournaments with a number of players that varies considerably from round to round (for example, an internal club tournament) is the Keizer system. This system sometimes allows players to replay against the same opponent rather than the tournament ending due to a lack of possible pairings (a situation that can arise if there are few players in the tournament).

Feel free to read this blog post: https://lichess.org/@/Alakaluf/blog/the-keizer-system-for-club-tournaments/jZRlsKDR

I've also written an article about this system (in French): https://lichess.org/@/pascalg/blog/le-systeme-dappariements-keizer-pour-les-tournois-de-club/EjdMO3Vi

The player @alakaluf has developed open-source software called "KeizerForClubs" to manage tournaments using the Keizer system: https://github.com/Dumuzy/KeizerForClubs/releases

Well, @pascalg , seems you're the guy I should be talking to! :D

I need to understand the VERY BASICS of these tournaments. I have never created one or participated in one, so I don't know what the goal is. I see and am very grateful that you are showing me solutions, but I don't understand the problem first :)

So, how would you see tournament related features in LiChess Tools? I don't want just to copy paste other people's work. Optimally, I would integrate with it or write a new solution once I understand the issue at hand. Is there a large untapped audience for such stuff or how does it work?

Thanks!

@TotalNoob69

  1. When you talk about Swiss-Manager (and the chess-results.com website associated with it), we are talking about the world of IRL chess and not online chess like lichess or chess.com.

  2. During the Covid period, some "serious" IRL tournaments (i.e., organized by FIDE) were organized online, but none used the tournament organization functions offered by lichess or chess.com. Why? Because the tournament organization functions offered by these 2 platforms are too rudimentary. These FIDE online tournaments were organized on the excellent and very powerful (unfortunately little known) tornelo.com platform.

  3. Currently in Lichess, small tournaments can be organized via a Lichess team. Three tournament organization options exist: individual tournaments using the arena or Swiss system, and tournaments between multiple teams using the arena system.

  4. If your goal with the LiChess Tools application is to remain within the framework of Lichess, then I see 2 ways to improve the tournament organization module:

    1. Make the tournament organization options currently offered by Lichess less rudimentary. By "less rudimentary," I mean that the tournament administrator should have more control over tournament management. For example, the administrator should be able to remove a player from the tournament at any time, correct a result after the fact, undo a round that has already been played, and so on.

    2. Offer tournament organization systems other than the Swiss and arena systems. The other main known tournament organization systems are the cup system and the round robin system (regarding the Keizer system I mentioned in the previous message, it can be considered in a certain way as a sort of variant of the Swiss system).
