A Lichess Team transformed my online chess experience. Are you missing out?

I'm interested in playing variants at slower speeds too, and this is supported even less. I think there is a particular interest for chess960 at such speed.

In the past I played in crazyhouse events that were at slower speeds with teams in boards, sorted by rating and you'd play against an opponent in the other team. Board 1 was 5+5, board 2 6+6 etc down to board 6 10+10. During the two seasons I played, I was on board 5 the first season and won all but one of my games, then went up to board 4 for the second season and lost all of them. I had chances in a few but didn't take them. Still, it was a good experience.

There are a few interested in anti-chess at slower speeds. And maybe a few for atomic. I don't have an enormous interest in the other variants, but there may be many who would, and want to play a strategic game rather than a race against the clock.

The polls of the official "960" team here have had a fair number of votes for 10+2. Anything slower was not on the list.

We have just finished the latest such "slow time control". Season 12 of the Crazyhouse Spring League, has just finished yesterday and had time controls as you describe, Board 1 was 5+5, Board 2 6+6... nice for a change to be able to think about your moves a little more and not be as rushed.

These are the teams and results: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1hQq88C4fnnYxb2dHr_XDqvxTwN6EQrbl3J_PSKV5K3I/edit#gid=0

This was run by the official Lichess Crazyhouse Team (https://lichess.org/team/lichess-crazyhouse) by volunteers

Also in progress and about to start Round 5, the 1st Annual Crazyhouse Grand Swiss with various time controls which is being run by @h8kurei from the Crazyhouse World Championship team (https://lichess.org/forum/team-crazyhouse-world-championship).

I think there is more to say about QueenRosieMary's essay than just hitting the like-button and playing the next game. We should be grateful for an essay like this and even more so for the work that people like QueenRosieMary do.

The very first section about the connection between "chess" and "community" reminded me of George Steiner and that the way chess connects people is much more than Wikipedia's definition of "community" can express. Steiner was fascinated by the fact that there are only three areas in which people can achieve great feats before puberty: music, mathematics and chess. And therefore, in these areas, language in the true sense of the word is not necessary to communicate.

I think QueenRosieMary's essay has to be classified here. People who have experienced the beauty of music, mathematics or chess are by no means specialists who only want to move in their field. Rather, they all have a very good sense of what a world must be like in which everyone can share in this beauty.

The essay reminds us of the responsibility we have towards the world and other people. And we must be grateful to people like QueenRosieMary for being willing to take on this responsibility, doing a lot of voluntary work, and using their optimism to encourage others to make their own contribution.

From that link I recognise the name Zaraza, as I played against her in the first season I mentioned winning both games. She's probably a lot better than me now though, if we ever played again, and I see she played on Board 2.

I think the problem was that I played in pepellou's team and of course he got banned from here, so I wasn't informed about the later events.

It would be good if this was made more accessible for all. I am nowhere near good enough for the crazyhouse world championships. I have to check if I'm a member of the "official" lichess crazyhouse team.

Yes, Zaraza is super strong now! ;) She was absolutely killing it in the Nations League the other week.

Oh dear that's unfortunate. I wouldn't have known about either event unless a friend had sent me the link and told me about it because he thought I might be interested. And I don't regard that sort of thing as "spamming" either because we were already having a dialogue and he had a legitimate reason to believe I would be interested.

Ref. being "good enough" for the Crazyhouse World Championship Team, I believe that team came into existence for the World Championship originally but it's a useful collection of crazyhouse players of all levels and as such, anyone is welcome to join the team.

Your crazyhouse rating would have been more than enough to play in either event. There was a "rating limit" of 1700 for the Spring League (as always) and I barely scraped in myself, but there was some flexibility with that as well fortunately.

Thank you for writing this inspiring post @QueenRosieMary! The precious work of an historian. Kudos.

Lovely post, QRM! I’m late to the party but wow this was fascinating to read as I have some experience in team leadership on this site (lichess4545). Time for a 960THINK revival?
