Well said, thank you for writing this post. Glad to know I'm not the only who feels this way.

Is it possible most people feel this way about long games---they don't actually have fun playing them, but feel like they are obligated to do for some reason (e.g. for rating, titles, improvement, experience, whatever)?
I think Kostya Kavutskiy of ChessDojo called for rapid to eventually become the standard format for competition.

They're obsolete, more social events like ComicCon than anything which serves a purpose.
Once upon a time, tournaments were the only true proving ground in chess, and they made for a nice weekend getaway or midweek event locally. Now we can play and get rated online. Events are multiday when they could be held in e-sport type setups where no one has to leave their home city, or they could be held in a single day at a restaurant between lunch and dinner, but organizers like free playing space.
I'm not even renewing my USCF membership as I enjoy online chess. Tournaments these days are awful unless you win them.

"On the first night, the late round starts at 7:30 PM, so on the first day of the tournament you can easily be playing past midnight. With your sleep destroyed, the tournament next targets your meals. The second day rounds start at 11 AM and 6 PM, trampling right over lunch and dinner. On the third day, having put you into a defenseless stupor by knocking out your sleep and nutrition, the tournament delivers the coup de grace: the early morning round at 9 AM. Good luck getting breakfast before the round starts!"
That's it in a nutshell, huh?
This past tournament, I pushed for the team name "Applaud for round 5 starting at 11am," in the hopes we'd make it to the best name contest.

I truly sympathise with the writer. I too would like to play in tourneys but the format doesn't make me happy. So I only play A) league chess because the dynamic of playing for a team is sth I do enjoy for various reasons; b) CC at Lichess. I've played c. 2500 games here in the last 10 yrs or so. A better format is a tourney where e.g. one plays once a week.
Perhaps I am bored by myself?
