I like this post, however I also think that many titled players/coaches aren't deliberately dishonest, they just don't have the introspection and self-awareness to understand how their own improvement worked. I have tried a few competitive hobbies and intellectual activities in my life, I happen to be much more talented at some than others, it's not that I didn't "train properly" that I never became a pro sportsman or indeed chess player, for example. In fact when a student I trained very hard at a particular sport, under top quality coaching....and reached a decent club level, with no prospects of ever being much better. OTOH I became a "pro mathematician" fairly easily, which I could try to attribute to a specific form of study, but it would be more honest and accurate to simply acknowledge that I happen to have a natural aptitude for that stuff, along with being nurtured early.
